Can anyone tell me about Kurkendall manufactory? I briefly handled a M1841 rifle that had that name or something like that stamped on the side plate and twice on the buttstock. Thanks.

It is very unlikely that "kirkendall" is a manufacturer. Most often when you find a name stamped in several places on a stock and also on a metal part it was put there by a costumer or someone else who rents or loans the gun and want to be sure it is returned to them without any question of who owns it. Also drill teams, high school color guards etc. etc. etc.

In the New York City area Eaves costume was the worst for defacing original guns. I once had an excellent Savage M1861 mkd. "Eaves" in at least 10 places on the stock.
