I'm looking for a reversable solution to modify the original front sight on an original 61 Springfield musket. I can slot the base and install a tall insert but before doing that I thought it best to check with others that may have done this.
Thank you in advance.

Jim,
My front sight on my orginal barrel appears soldered to the barrel. Why not remove the base, put on a new one. When ready for reversal, re-solder the original back on.

The original front sights are usually dovedailed. If yours is, remove the original to save it and buy/fabricate a replacement front sight

As Tom said, the original front sights, on original Springfields, were dovetailed.....BUT they are also brazed in place.....going to take a bit of heat to loosen one.

You can also solder a piece of brass onto the original sight. Make an upside down V out of some thicker shim stock. Lay it over the original sight and fill with some solder. You might have to do it a few time to get the elevation otherwise if the brass is thick enough there is a little room for some filing. It will take a bit longer but you won't ruin your original sight.
