Hi folks,
I've come across a P1853 that has me scratching my head. It is a 3-band with Barnett London stamped on the lock. The stock has an oval with Barnett Gunmakers London stamped inside it. The excellent overall condition of the rifle indicates it is not an original but I can find no reference to a reproduction marked Barnett. Can anyone clear this up for me? I'm considering buying the gun but would really like to know what I'm getting.

Thanks,
Storm

Watch out for a modern "DEFARBED" reproduction. Photos may help if you can provide them.

As John had said watch out for the DEFARBED. Most that have been DEFARDED have had all reproduction marks moved to places like under the barrel where they cant be seen.

The font is the wrong type for one thing, the snail tail on the bolster is wrong and the lock plate should have a line near the outer edge.

Has the seller told you this is an authentic original antique arm?

No, he isn't claiming it is original. On the other hand he claims to be a reenactor but doesn't seem to know much about the gun. I find that odd. All this and the fact that I'd have to drive 127 miles one way to see it has me about to decide I don't want the rifle. I appreciate all the help given.

Thanks,
John

A wise decision!

That looks like a Lodgewood lockplate. This may be early "defarb" work by Todd Watts, but he usually replaces that bad repro hammer these days. I've never seen that oval stock stamp on an original Barnett P53.

I truly do appreciate all the help! Even though I'm mostly a flintlock shooter and not a reenactor of any sort I'm going to bookmark this site and drop by from time to time.

Hallo!

I believe it to be a Lodgewood offering. (It looks like their expanded services now. As shared, it might be an earlier Todd Watts, but IMHO, I doubt it.)

Side Note:

Not all private or commercial "de-farbers" relocate modern stampings to the underside of the barrel, so that is not a "quick check." (Yes, though, if they did... obviously.

A small number of reenactors who do not know the Federal laws, or where their own State or Local laws conflict over the non need for a serial number on a repro muzzleloader, want/need the number redone.
Some like it as it can be useful, if stolen and found, to prove it is theirs.
