Gents,
What would be a black powder charge to start with for a 12# mortar? 100yds. Probably Cannon grade and/or 4FA powder.
Thanks :D

You want to use cannon or 1F only.
really depends on your angle and how tight your balls are fitting in the barrel.
You want them to be able to roll in and out easy. If they wedge or get tight they will build more pressure and go long.

most run in the range of 55 deg on the barrel and with 1F a base charge will be 280 to 320 from mine and all the other tubes I run.
Pending given range and back stop.... start in that range.
if you have water or woods much past 100 yards don't start with much over 260 and work up.

I say this only for a N-SSA tube.

Thanks for the info.
That will provide a good place to start. I realize 4FA is not in the mortar rules. But not an issue as I currently do not plan on shooting my mortar in the N-SSA. I use 4Fa as it's characteristics are similar to 1Fg and I can occasionally find it cheaper than Cannon or 1Fg.
Thanks again. :)
