I have always liked the rolling block. Am very tempted to put one of these together but need real specifics about the gun, such as size action etc. Is there any spec sheet out there for these and has anyone used one in NSS-A ?

thanks

Des - Are you asking about a Split Breech Remington Carbine?

Yes that is the one, but I can not find much on the action as to the difference with the later rolling blocks

The Remington Split Breech Carbine barely resembles the later contract Remingtons. There is a large frame and small frame model. There is nothing available to convert to a Split Breech Carbine.

I was afraid of that answer. I was hoping a newer receiver could be used and use center fire 56-50 like the Spencer.

Thanks John

Here's a breakdown of the Split Breech action. Much different than a Number 1 Rolling Block.

Thanks for the info. The urge is still there but the wallet is not!

Yeah John the first time is a real learning experience and every time after that an annoyance. I think there was alchohol involved in the development of this piece.

The # 1 action was a GREAT improvement.

YOu don't want to shoot one anyway. I bought one that was in parts, fix it , converted it and made new stocks. Shot it for a while. The sight radius is so short the it is difficult to shoot.

Bob, is right about the 50 caliber being clunky and ugly. A gentleman like yourself needs the smaller civil war version in .44 caliber. This was also a Civil War issue along with the bigger .50 big frame. It is much trimmer with pleasing lines. It just happens that I have one of these, although in parts. If interested send me a PM and I will send you pic's.

Ron Hubbard,

The split breech Remington is the shortest carbine I have. The sight radius is about one inch shorter than a Smith. Like you, I wouldn't want to shoot that little thing and try to hit small targets.

Bruce, sent you a PM 2 actually as I have a hard time for some reason seeing if they ever go out.

They are really not that complicated, just different. I'm going to try and post some pictures that show how the parts go together, a skeleton view with the parts I have. Des, send me your Email address thru PM so i can get pics to you.

BTW this is the early Remington Ryder Patent. The bigger .50 caliber housing has the upper tang cast in place. The .46 action has the upper tang as a separate screwed in piece. It is really a modern modular style action. The records indicate it as a .46 caliber not .44, sorry for any confusion. Interestly the bore would take a .456 / .457 bullet. Sound familiar? We just keep reinventing things.

It is pretty easy to convert; add a pin to the bottom of the flag on the hammer and lower the slot in the block about 1/8+". I have shot mine from time to time but the sharps rifle shoots much better.
Oh , and there is alot more there than I had to start with.

Bob.
