My Great Grandfather was a Private, Wagoneer in the Minnesota 2nd Regiment. Can someone tell me an educated guess as to what firearm he was likely to have used? He went to the sea with Sherman. Thanks in advance. I would like to buy something he probably carried.

You need to check the returns for the 2nd Minnesota for late 1864. That would tell you what arms were present with the regiment.

There is a good chace that a wagonner wasn't armed. I'm not really sure myself.

According to:

http://books.google.com/books/about/An_introduction_to_Civil_War_small_arms.html?id=6K AQAQAAMAAJ

On page 90, it lists that the 2 MN had a mix of 1861 Springfields and Enfield Rifle Muskets (1853 3-Band). This is documented for the time period 1863-1864.

However, I have to agree with the above that it would be hard to say what weapon a Wagoneer would have been issued.

The book is available on Amazon for a very reasonable price:
