Sharps Cartridges

A former N-SSA member and friend wants to start shooting his Sharps rifle again and asked my advice on cartridges. I don't shoot a sharps, but it seems to me that way back on the BB I saw mention of reloadable cartridges which don't actually go in the chamber. My impression was that there is some sort of plunger device on the closed end. You start the ball into the chamber and then using the plunger "squirt" the bullet and powder all the way into the chamber.

Have I been dreaming or do such things exist, and if so, what's the source?
