    Re: Replace front sight

    To all -

The Small Arms Committee is currently working on a solution for the ArmiSport M-1842 smoothbore musket front sight issue.

I will post the results when they become available.

    Hi all,

I am about to buy a reproduction 1842, and would like to defarb the front sight with the correct brass one. In another thread it was said you will need to get a SAC card.

    Is this still the latest?

So I take my arm to our regional inspector at a skirmish and get approval?

Rule 14.9.1(l) states: "Notwithstanding the above provisions, no modifications of any sort may be made to the original as-issued dimensions, form, nature, or location of any sights affixed to a smoothbore musket to be used in any smoothbore
    competition." This includes reproductions.

Section 14.9.1 deals specifically with alterations of sights for the various types of firearms. Smoothbore has always been held to be as close to an "as issued" competition as possible, hence the prohibition on sight alteration.

Please feel free to email either John Holland, the Small Arms Committee Chairman, or me with any further questions or concerns. Good luck!

I find that hard to take.
I know of several that have cards with a brass blade on the front.
Also JZ is doing his guns that way that he defarbs and also builds.

    what have I missed.
If what you say is correct than all the repops with brass on the front should be DQ at shoots?
    Is that correct?

Question is: does this "no modification" rule apply to the front sight blade composition (steel vs brass) or its position relative to the original arm made 1843-55, or in the instance of the modern repros, "no modifications" to the approved production model arms? If so, I'll go back to shooting my original C.S. Macon "as is"!

Any changes on the left positioned front sight band? Can a welded identical contoured and height sight be put on?

This was covered in a series of other posts later on, hence this page was not updated. However, here is the answer:

The ArmiSport Model 1842 misaligned front sight may be removed and replaced with a correct and proper Brass blade front sight. Pay very close attention to the original Model 1842 front sight so you get it correct, it is approximately 0.125" (1/8th) high, and 0.187" (3/16) wide at the base. Once you have transformed your front sight from the way it was approved you are required to get a Small Arms Individual Approval for it. This may be done on a Regional level by an official Small Arms Inspector, or it can be done at any National at the Small Arms Office, Wednesday through Friday from 9-11.

    Sincerely,
    John Holland
