    Half Salute Question

What is the significance of the half salute (where the soldier crosses their right arm accross their chest? When does it get used, is it limited to certain ranks? Is it only in the movies?

Are there any good resources floating around (perhaps even old drill/solider manuals) about Civil War parade and drill practices?

    Try this link

In case the link doesn't work what you are referring to is the method of saluteing while carrying a musket. It is not a half salute but the salute. In general it goes: With the musket at Shoulder Arms (on right side) the left arm will be brought forward and across the chest so as to strike the musket near the right shoulder.
