ID'd M1844/60 Piedmont ~ Named to Soldier from 51st Illinois Infantry

Here is a very neat M1844/60 Piedmont rifle musket, imported by the North. Approximately 12,000 were imported, and most went to Illinois and Ohio troops. This particular musket belonged to Alfred Holiday of Company E, 51st Illinois infantry. The musket was shortened some, and approximately half the rifling removed for some reason. It is what it is, as it is a fascinating piece of history with all the documentation! The musket is marked "A Holladay" on the stock, as well as "E" (for Company E). All the records for Mr. Holiday (or Holladay, as there were multiple spellings as is common from back then) were copied from the family, from his original enlistment papers all the way to documents going into the early 20th century from the pension office!

$650 shipped for this fantastic historical lot!
