Does anyone know what bullet you would use for a Garrett 1863 Sharps carbine. If it matters, the ser# is 242.

I use the NEI 540-490 in my 2 Garrett carbines. One is a 7 right and the other is a 6 left. Both shoot equally as well.

I shoot the Christmas tree bullet cast from a Palmetto mold in my Garrett with good results.

"Is your barrel in the .530s?"
No. I am not sure what the barrel slugs at but it's not 530. I bought it when I joined the N-SSA in 1985. At that time I slugged the barrel and made a sizing die for it. The die is 554 so the barrel has to be 552 or 553. It really shot good with the Christmas tree bullet. I won a number of medals with it and I loved shooting it but it was to much of a pain to clean. So I bought a Richmond carbine.
PS. You have to really love cleaning guns to love this sport.

Hi Fletcher,
Chance you could plug gauge your bore? It should be about .523 bore give or take. If that is the case then it should be about .542 groove. If you are going to the beach, stop by and I can validate this for you.
