Original fotos of civil war soldiers show them with kepis or forage caps which seem to be loose on the very top of their heads - as if they were too small.
In movies and reenactments caps and kepis seem to fit better .
My question: Was it fashionable in the 19th century to wear headgear this way or were there other reasons? Do movies (Gettysburg, Gods and Gernerals,...) show it historically incorrect?
