Yeck Smith

I have a Yeck Smith that I am having a hard time getting it to group. Using a Lyman 515139 mold and 3f. Have tried from 24 - 28 grains and had no luck. I have another 50 rounds I have worked up and will be using a different lube and from 26 - 32 grains. I also have a different bullet I am going to try but I was wondering what anyone else may be using that is working.

I used the same bullet that cast at 517 out the mold with 35 grains of 3F Goex dripping to cover all three rings with a 50/50 mix of beeswax/crisco also in a Yeck. Shot one ragged hole......

Wow 35? That surprised me. I will try what I already have worked up, if it doesn't work I will try your recommendation.

When I shot an original Smith I used that bullet with 35 grns of 3f, also. The gun shot better than me.

I shot a Yeck Smith for many years using a Lyman 515141 which I believe was modified removing one ring from the base of the bullet. I used 35 gr FFF. It liked wheel weights believe it or not. Obviously with a less than stellar team, the first time I shot it I was 15 for 15 on the pigeon board. I had to try to miss with it. The breech flash hole would shoot out every few years. I bored out the darned thing, and inserted a liner made out of a grade 8 bolt from a 1969 Buick. I got tired of all the work and started using my original Smith then moved on to a Sharps.

I don't shoot a Yeck Smith, but do shoot a smith. As do several teammates.

All I can say is:
-One of us (me) is using a Lee 515 bullet, pure lead, 30 gr of 2f, and cornmeal filler.
-One of us is using the same bullet, but with wheelweights, and 35 gr of 3f.
-One of us is using a Rapine bullet(I think) of soft lead with 28 gr of 3f, if I recall.

Dunno what the others are using.

I have tried Lyman, Lee, Rapine, Moose, and RCBS bullets. ONE worked for me.

Could be as simple as that. What one gun likes, another doesn't, Yeck included.

Try different powders and bullets and hardnesses.

I've been satisfied with the 35 grain charge too. Have you thought about other variables? Lack of lube can lead to great consternation.

Check the hinge pin. Yeck smith's wear in that area. I have to shelve mine with a stainless steel bushing with a new hinge pin. When you hold the carbine to your shoulder can the barrel portion be moved to the right or left? This is caused by a bad hinge pin. If this is the case that is why the carbine doesn't group. Also some of the bores on Yeck smith are small. I had to go to a 512 size bullet. Once I fixed that the hinge pin problem the Yeck Smith shoot very well. Good luck.

I think you meant "sleeve" Gary. Shelving a gun is pretty radical - usually followed by selling the gun to some poor unsuspecting pilgrim. Like I did with my Sharps.
