Rules that specify the kinds of original sighted smoothbores approved?

    Hi all,

I have perused the Approved Arms List and the Rules and am not able to locate the specifications for original sighted smoothbores.

Can someone direct me to the right place?

    Thanks,

    Steve

In the same way you won't find a list of what original muskets were approved, you won't find this either... it falls under the blanket of "at least 100 were issued".

Offhand, I know this to include:
    -1816 H&P conversions
    -The "Potsdam" musket conversions
-There's a British gun, I think the Brunswick (Baker?) that was available and issued in a smoothbore pattern
-Various Austrian tube locks (and conversions) such as the 1840 and 1842

Probably a few others out there, but for real consideration, the first two are the only ones you are likely to encounter.

The only reason an original arm needs approval is:
-If it is modified from existing condition, such as non-blanket covered CF conversions of RF cartridge guns
-For sighted smoothbores, to verify the gun doesn't have rifling and/or isn't some other form of gun (say a cone in breech 1816) that was converted to sighted status.

I'd start with the Approved Arms List

Sorry, didn't read your post right. You mentioned the approved arms list.

Ah, it's 100! I was thinking it was 1000. Thanks for pointing that out.

If you read the cover page to the "Approved Arms List" it states that the list is for "Reproduction Arms" that have "Production Approval" only. It is not a "Match Arms" list of all allowed original arms.

There is no rule or section that specifies the exact original arms that are approved. Section 19.1 specifies the requirements originals need to meet to be approved by the SAC. Section 19.3 describes sights for smoothbores.

Ok. I was hoping to find a list of approved original arms to guide me in figuring out what kinds of H&P 1816 were acceptable for N-SSA use.

I think, reading Moller, that I have figured that out. The federal contract H&Ps fit the bill, but most of the NJ H&Ps were rifled. You can tell the NJ ones from the clean out screw.

    Hi Harry,

Yup, if I understand it right, according to Moller, all of the H&Ps with cleanout screws were New Jersey contract, and most of them were rifled, but not all.

The trick is finding documentation that indicates that at least 100 were not rifled.

If you can find that, I would think then that *any* non-rifled NJ H&P would be considered legal, since there would be no way (presumably) to differentiate rifled variants from non-rifled ones other than the presence or absence of rifling in the extant example.

What you need, then is contact documentation for those 100. Good luck on this mission, if you choose to accept!

Couldn't hurt. Like I said, as far as I understand things (which isn't saying much), what you are looking for is documentation to support at least 100 of the H&P NJ conversions being left as smoothbores.
